Ice Warning Issued for Cornwall as Temperatures Dip Overnight

A yellow weather warning for ice has been issued by the Met Office, covering the period from 6pm today, Friday 2nd January, until 10am tomorrow.

The warning highlights the possibility of icy stretches developing overnight, bringing a risk of travel disruption and injuries from slips and falls.

What’s expected overnight

Showers of rain, sleet and some snow are forecast to affect parts of south west England this evening and overnight into Saturday morning. Snow is expected mainly over higher ground.

Where showers occur, icy stretches are likely to form on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

While many areas are expected to see little or no snow settling, there is potential for a centimetre or two of snow over Bodmin Moor. Similar conditions are possible across the west of Dartmoor and Exmoor.

Possible impacts

The Met Office says there is a chance of some injuries due to slips and falls on icy surfaces. Travel may also be affected where roads and paths have not been treated.

Advice for the public

People are advised to take extra care when heading out in icy conditions. Leaving the house at least five minutes earlier than normal can help reduce the risk of accidents, slips and falls.

Those travelling on foot are encouraged to use pavements along main roads, which are more likely to be less slippery. Cyclists are advised to stick to main roads where possible, as these are more likely to have been treated.

Drivers are advised to check road conditions before setting off. Anyone using buses or trains should check timetables and be prepared to amend travel plans if necessary.

Why the warning is yellow

The Met Office says the warning has a medium likelihood but a low impact. People are reminded that weather warnings can change and it is important to stay up to date with the local forecast.
