04/10/2025 – Weather in Cornwall – Yellow Weather Warning For Wind
The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for wind across parts of England and Wales today, Saturday 4th October 2025, as Storm Amy sweeps in with gusts expected to reach up to 65 mph in some areas.
The warning, which is in force from midnight until 7pm today, covers much of the western coast, including Cornwall, where exposed areas are expected to see the strongest gusts and large waves along sea fronts.
Strong Winds and Travel Disruption Expected
According to the Met Office, west to southwesterly winds will strengthen and become rather gusty throughout Saturday, with gusts of 45-55 mph possible in places, and perhaps 60-65 mph along some exposed coasts, particularly in the west and briefly over hills inland. Winds are expected to ease later this evening.
The conditions could lead to delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges, as well as disruption to road, rail, air and ferry transport. Bus and train services may also be affected, with some journeys taking longer than usual.
Coastal communities could face the impact of spray and large waves, particularly along seafronts and coastal routes. The Met Office also warns of the possibility of short-term power loss and disruption to other services.
Safety Advice from the Met Office
People are advised to prepare for possible disruption by checking road conditions and transport timetables before travelling, and amending plans if necessary.
The Met Office has also shared practical advice for staying safe during potential power cuts:
“People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.”
Those living near the coast are urged to take extra care:
“If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves. Even from the shore, large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea. Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
The Met Office also reminds people to stay up to date with weather forecasts, as warnings can change quickly depending on developing conditions.
Why a Yellow Warning?
This alert has been issued because the Met Office rates the event as having a medium likelihood and a low impact overall — meaning while widespread disruption isn’t certain, it’s possible in affected areas.
Residents and visitors are urged to stay informed throughout the day and take precautions to stay safe as Storm Amy passes through.
