05/01/2026 – Weather in Cornwall – Yellow Weather Warning For Snow & Ice

Published On: 5 January 2026Last Updated: 5 January 2026By

Two Snow and Ice Warnings in Place as Icy Conditions Linger

Two yellow weather warnings for snow and ice are currently in place, covering a period from Sunday afternoon through to Tuesday morning, according to the Met Office.

The first warning runs from 12:00pm on Sunday 4th January until 12:00pm today, Monday 5th January. A second warning then follows from 12:00pm today until 11:00am tomorrow, Tuesday 6th January.

Both warnings highlight the potential for travel disruption and icy conditions across parts of Wales, northwest England, the West Midlands and southwest England.

First warning: Sunday afternoon into Monday

Snow showers pushed further inland on Sunday afternoon and evening. Along windward coasts, rain and sleet were more likely, while inland areas saw snow showers.

Not all locations within the warning area were expected to see snow, but accumulations of 1 to 3 cm were possible in many places by Monday morning. In a few inland and higher areas, particularly across parts of Wales, 5 to 8 cm could build up.

Icy stretches were expected to form widely, especially on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

Second warning: Monday into Tuesday morning

The second yellow warning covers Monday afternoon and evening through to Tuesday morning. During this period, scattered sleet and snow showers are expected to continue feeding southwards, particularly near western coasts, though showers may occasionally spread further inland.

While not all areas will be affected, some small snow accumulations are possible. The greatest chance is across parts of Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion, where 5 to 10 cm of snow could accumulate, especially near the Preseli Mountains.

Hail is also possible in some showers, which may lead to locally slippery conditions. Although showers are expected to ease overnight, ice is likely to become a more widespread hazard as temperatures fall below freezing.

Travel disruption and safety advice

The Met Office warns that some roads and railways are likely to be affected, with longer journey times possible by road, bus and train services. There is also a risk of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.

People are advised to plan journeys carefully, allow extra time, and check for road closures or delays to public transport. Those travelling on foot or by bike are advised to stick to main roads, which are more likely to have been treated.

Drivers are advised to check road conditions before setting off and to carry essentials in case of delays, including warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, an ice scraper or de-icer, a warning triangle, a high visibility vest and an in-car phone charger.

The Met Office also advises staying up to date with the latest forecasts, as weather warnings can change.

Why the warnings are yellow

Both warnings have been issued with a medium likelihood and a low impact.
