Cornwall Faces Hail, Thunder and Sub-Average Temperatures This Week

If you stepped outside this morning expecting May warmth, you’ll already know something is off. The Met Office has issued its latest South West England forecast covering Thursday 14th May through Monday 18th May, and Cornwall is in for a noticeably chilly spell with showers, hail and even thunder on the cards.

Today’s Outlook

Scattered blustery showers will continue across the region throughout Thursday, with some bringing hail and the possibility of thunder. The showers are expected to be more frequent than they were on Wednesday, although sunny spells will break through at times.

Gusty winds are forecast across Cornwall, though conditions will be lighter further east. Temperatures will remain below average for mid-May, with a maximum of 13°C.

A Chilly Night Ahead

The wind and showers are set to ease overnight, with most of the region becoming dry by morning. Clear spells will develop under lighter winds, which will lead to a chilly end to the night. The minimum temperature is expected to drop to 6°C.

Friday’s Forecast

Friday brings a more settled picture. The odd early shower is possible, but otherwise it will be a dry day with light winds. Cloud will roll in at times, broken up by bright or sunny spells. The lighter winds will make it feel less chilly, although the maximum temperature stays at 13°C.

Weekend and Beyond

Saturday looks mostly dry with light winds across the South West. Sunday sees a change, with a band of showery rain moving east through the region. Monday will be dry but rather cloudy, and temperatures are expected to return to near average by then.

So if you’ve been putting off jobs in the garden or planning a coastal walk, the back end of the weekend and into Monday looks like the better window.
