As winter maintains its icy grip, the MET Office has extended its yellow weather warning for today, Friday, January 19, 2024. This alert emphasises the continued presence of treacherous ice, especially in the morning hours, in various regions. Expect the following conditions:

  • Icy Patches: There will likely be icy patches on untreated roads, pavements, and cycle paths.
  • Risk of Injuries: Be cautious of potential injuries resulting from slips and falls on icy surfaces.

Travellers are urged to exercise caution and make necessary preparations for challenging conditions while venturing out today. Stay safe!

Reason for update

A few wintry showers have developed across northwest England which could generate patchy ice, so the warning has been extended further north to cater for these.

Headline:

Sunny but cold on Friday. Unsettled yet milder this weekend.

Today:

Frosty start with icy stretches possible and freezing fog patches taking a while to clear in places. A dry day follows with plenty of sunshine and blue skies. Temperatures slightly higher than of late, but still feeling cold. Maximum temperature 6 °C.

Tonight:

Remaining dry but with skies clouding over. A chilly evening with pockets of frost and some fog patches, but temperatures rebounding and fog dispersing overnight as winds strengthen. Minimum temperature -1 °C.

Saturday:

Cloudy with odd spots of drizzle, though many remaining dry. Blustery for all with coastal gales developing in the west. Continuing to turn milder with temperatures returning closer to average. Maximum temperature 8 °C.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:

Very unsettled on Sunday with inland gales and outbreaks of rain. Brighter on Monday with blustery showers, then further rain arrives on Tuesday. Turning much milder.
