21/01/2024 – Cornwall Braces for Storm Isha: MET Office Issues Amber Warning for Heavy Wind & Rain

Residents of Cornwall are on alert as the MET Office has issued an amber warning for heavy wind & rain associated with Storm Isha, which is expected to cause significant disruptions across the region on Sunday and into early Monday.

Storm Isha will bring a spell of very strong winds from Sunday evening into Monday. Disruption to travel and utilities is likely.

What to Expect

  • There is a good chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
  • Probably some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs
  • Longer journey times and cancellations likely, as road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected
  • Some roads and bridges likely to close
  • Injuries and danger to life is likely from large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts and properties
  • Bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer
  • Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer
  • Flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely
  • Some interruption to power supplies and other services likely

Headline:

Storm Isha will bring very strong winds later today.

Today:

Dry for much of today and locally bright this morning, but perhaps some rain this afternoon. Becoming increasingly windy with gales or severe gales developing as Storm Isha nears. A much milder day, but offset somewhat by the strong winds. Maximum temperature 12 °C.

Tonight:

Very wet and windy this evening with gales, occasionally severe in some coastal areas. Turning somewhat less windy and drier overnight, with clear spells and scattered heavy showers. Frost free. Minimum temperature 6 °C.

Monday:

Another windy day, albeit not quite as windy as today. Often bright with sunny spells at times but also occasional blustery showers, heavy in places. Feeling chillier than today. Maximum temperature 10 °C.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

Changeable. Wet and windy on Tuesday with heavy rain at times and very mild. Brighter and less mild on Wednesday with winds easing. Further windy and showery weather on Thursday.
