Brace for the Cold – Amber Cold-Health Alert Issued for South West Until 12 Noon On 8 January

Published On: 3 January 2025Last Updated: 3 January 2025By

As temperatures plunge, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an amber cold-health alert for the South West, effective until 12 noon on 8th January. Cornwall Council has shared essential guidance to help residents stay warm, safe, and healthy during the cold snap.

Keeping Your Home Warm

Maintaining a comfortable temperature indoors is key. Residents are advised to keep their main living spaces between 18˚C to 21˚C, while the rest of the home should be at least 16˚C.

For those struggling with heating costs, financial support is available through schemes such as:

Stay Cosy and Active

Dressing warmly can make a significant difference. Wearing hats, gloves, and scarves, along with layering thin clothing, helps to trap warm air. Staying active is also important—moving around at least once an hour can help circulation and keep you warmer.

Supporting Vulnerable Neighbours

Residents are encouraged to check in on older friends and neighbours to ensure they are warm, particularly at night. Ensuring they have enough food and medicine to avoid going out in freezing conditions is another key way to help.

Warmth Hubs and Community Support

For those who need extra warmth or a safe place to socialise, Community Hubs (also known as Warmth Hubs) are available across Cornwall. These spaces provide warmth, support, and activities throughout the winter months.

Winter Wellbeing Guide

For more advice on staying healthy and warm, residents can download the Winter Wellbeing guide, produced by Inclusion Cornwall with support from Cornwall Council’s Public Health team.

As the cold weather continues, taking small steps can make a big difference in staying warm and well this winter.
