Cornwall weather: Thursday 22 October, Storm Austen blows in
Make the most of this morning, because it will not last.
Cornwall starts Thursday fine and mostly dry, but a named storm is already on the way. Storm Austen pushes cloud, rain and strengthening winds into the southwest through the afternoon, and by nightfall it is the main event. Here is how the week’s weather unfolds across Cornwall and the wider South West.

Today
Fine and mostly dry to start, with any early showers quickly fading. Sunny spells hold on longest in the east. Through the afternoon, cloud and rain tied to Storm Austen push into the southwest, and the wind picks up noticeably by evening. A high of around 15°C.
Tonight
This is when Storm Austen really arrives, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. Northern parts may get a lull in the wind in the early hours, but gales push into Cornwall around dawn. The temperature drops to about 8°C.
Friday
Rain to start everywhere, clearing away to the northeast through the morning. The wind is the headline, staying strong all day with gales along the coast and in exposed spots. Cooler too, with a high of 12°C. Worth allowing extra time if you are out on the roads.

The weekend and into Monday
No quick end to the unsettled spell. Strong winds and heavy rain return on Saturday, before a brief settled interlude brings sunny spells on Sunday. Make the most of that window, because more wind and rain arrive overnight into Monday.
