If you pulled back the curtains to a grey-white blur this morning, you are not alone. Much of Cornwall has woken under fog, and northern coasts are hanging on to some low cloud. The good news is that it clears. By the afternoon the county should get the warmest, brightest few hours of the week before the pattern turns over again. Here is how the Cornwall weather looks from today through to the weekend.

Today

The dense fog sitting inland will lift gradually through the morning, so an early journey might be a slow one before it thins out. Expect it to cloud over by lunchtime, with the odd spot of rain possible, then occasional bright spells breaking through in the afternoon. It stays mild for October, with a high of around 21°C across the South West. For a day that starts behind a wall of grey, that is a decent reward for waiting it out.

Tonight

The cloud holds on overnight and those spots of rain keep going, with some heavier bursts possible further east later in the night. Winds stay light to begin with before picking up and turning breezy by sunrise. The temperature dips to a low of about 9°C, so a cooler, fresher feel is on the way in behind it.

Wednesday

Wednesday starts wet, but the outbreaks of rain clear away eastwards through the day to leave sunny spells behind them. It feels cooler and fresher than Tuesday in a brisk northerly breeze, and the top temperature eases back to around 17°C. Keep an eye on the west in the evening, where a scattering of light showers arrives.

The outlook: Thursday to Saturday

Thursday carries on in much the same vein, with sunny spells and the showers easing off, though it still feels cool in a northwesterly breeze. Then the pattern shifts. Cloud thickens into Friday and brings rain and blustery winds with it, the wettest and windiest day in view. Saturday is set to settle things back down, which is about as far ahead as this forecast is willing to commit.
