Cornwall weather: Wednesday 16 September, showers then warmer weekend

Grab a jacket before you head out. Cornwall opens the day under light showers and a gusty breeze, but the forecast has a reward built into it: sit through a damp start to the week and the weekend turns drier, calmer and a couple of degrees warmer. Here is how the Cornwall weather shapes up through to Sunday, taken from the latest Met Office forecast for Truro.

Today (Wednesday 16 September)

Light showers lead the day, with the wettest window early on: around a 50% chance of rain at 7am, so the morning is the part to plan around. The high reaches 18C and it dips to about 14C, though with the wind on it feels closer to 16C easing to 14C. Gusts top out near 25mph, enough to turn an umbrella inside out on an exposed stretch, so a hood is the safer bet.

Tonight

The showers fade to a flat, overcast night. Temperatures hold up at around 15C, mild for mid-September, with a 40% chance of catching a bit of rain. Nothing dramatic overnight, just grey and close.

Thursday 17 September

Thursday splits in two. There is a sharp 90% chance of light showers around 6am, so the start is wet, but sunny intervals break through as the day goes on. The high stays at 18C with a cooler low of 12C, feeling like 13C to 15C, and the wind picks up again with gusts to 29mph. Bright spells between the showers make it the day to grab a dry gap if you get one.

Friday 18 September

Back under cloud on Friday, overcast for most of the day with a 50% chance of rain arriving around 2pm. The high is 18C and the low a mild 16C, though it feels more like 12C to 16C in the breeze, and gusts again reach 29mph. A middling end to the working week before things start to turn.

The weekend

This is where the week pays off. Saturday stays overcast but warms to 20C, with only a 30% chance of rain around midnight and a low of 16C, feeling like 18C through the day. Gusts ease back to 27mph. Sunday goes one better: cloudy rather than wet, a 20% chance of rain first thing at 5am, and the high climbing to 21C with a feels-like of 20C as the wind drops to around 21mph.

So the shape of it is a slow climb. The showers that open the week thin out, the temperatures creep up day by day, and by Sunday the wind that has been shoving the rain across Cornwall finally starts to let go.
