If you are heading out across Cornwall today, keep one hand on your hood. The sunshine is back in patches, but the wind is the thing you will notice first, and it sets the tone for a week that keeps swapping bright spells for showers.

Today

Truro and much of the county see sunny intervals through the day, with the temperature topping out at 16°C. It will feel closer to 13°C once the wind is added in, and that wind is the real story. Gusts reach up to 40mph, so every bright spell comes with a proper blustery edge. There is a 30% chance of catching a shower at some point, so it is worth having a jacket within reach if you want to follow the weather across Cornwall before heading out.

Tonight

The evening starts partly cloudy before light showers push in overnight. Temperatures hold up at around 13°C, feeling more like 10°C in the breeze, so it stays mild for the time of year even as the damp arrives.

Thursday 8 October

Thursday keeps the same shape, sunny intervals and another high of 16°C. The wind eases back a touch, with gusts around 31mph rather than today’s 40mph. Keep half an eye on the late afternoon, when there is a 30% chance of a shower around 6pm.

Friday 9 October

Friday is the wettest of the working week. Light rain is forecast, the chance of rain climbs to 40% first thing around 7am, and the gusts are back up to 40mph. On the plus side it is the warmest day so far, reaching 17°C.

The weekend

The weekend looks the calmer half of the forecast. Saturday brings sunny intervals back, a high of 16°C and the lightest winds of the week at around 28mph, with only a 20% chance of an early shower. Sunday clouds over and holds at 16°C, with the wind dropping further to about 26mph. The rain stays away until late, with the chance climbing to 40% by around 11pm.

Into next week

Beyond the weekend the temperature actually nudges up. Monday is overcast but reaches 18°C, and Tuesday holds at 18°C too, though that is when heavier rain is pencilled in. So the week ends milder than it starts, with the sunshine and the showers trading places from one day to the next.
