Ice Warning Issued: Could Your Journey Be Affected Tonight?

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for ice, covering parts of southwest England, including Cornwall.

The warning is in place from 4pm today, Saturday 3rd January, until 12pm tomorrow, Sunday 4th January.

What’s Expected

The Met Office says icy stretches may develop during Saturday evening and overnight into Sunday morning, particularly where showers occur.

These showers are expected to include sleet and snow, with snow mainly falling over higher ground. While many places are likely to see little or no snow settling, there is potential for several centimetres over higher areas, including Bodmin Moor, as well as Dartmoor and parts of Wales.

Where showers fall, untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths may become icy.

Possible Impacts

The warning highlights the risk of:

  • Injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces

  • Icy patches forming on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths

  • Some travel disruption

Advice for Travelling

People are being advised to take extra care if heading out during the warning period.

The Met Office recommends:

  • Leaving the house at least five minutes earlier than normal to avoid rushing

  • Using pavements along main roads if walking, as they are more likely to be less slippery

  • Sticking to main roads if cycling, where treatment is more likely

  • Checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, and adjusting plans if needed

They also advise staying up to date with local forecasts, as weather warnings can change.

Why the Warning Is Yellow

The warning has been issued with a medium likelihood and a low impact, which is why it has been classed as yellow rather than amber or red.

Anyone travelling later today or early on Sunday is being encouraged to take care, particularly in higher parts of Cornwall where icy conditions are more likely to develop.
