Public Asked Not to Share Chough Locations During Breeding Season

The National Trust on the Lizard has issued a reminder to the public about protecting Cornwall’s choughs during their critical breeding period.

From 1st March to 31st July, people are being asked to avoid posting photographs of choughs online if the images reveal their location or nest sites. The guidance is aimed at helping protect the birds while they are breeding.

Anyone who spots choughs while out walking or exploring Cornwall is instead encouraged to report their sighting directly to the Cornwall Bird Watching & Preservation Society.

Sightings can be emailed to [email protected]. When submitting a report, people are asked to include the date and location of the sighting. Providing a grid reference or what3words location if possible will help make the record more useful.

Helping Monitor Cornwall’s Chough Population

The Cornwall Bird Watching & Preservation Society maintains the chough sightings database for Cornwall. The records go back to 2001 and include many thousands of sightings reported by birders and members of the public.

This information helps organisations monitor and protect the returning chough population in Cornwall.

A Partnership Working to Protect Choughs

The Cornwall Bird Watching & Preservation Society is part of the Cornish Chough Conservation Network. This partnership brings together several organisations working to protect the species, including the RSPB, National Trust, Natural England, and the Cornwall Bird Watching & Preservation Society.
