There’s something quietly thrilling about not knowing what will turn up. That was the reward for thirteen nature lovers who braved a grey and changeable morning on the Roseland Peninsula, and went home having seen nearly fifty species of bird.

The group gathered for a birdwatching trip at Ruan Lanihorne, undeterred by weather that could not make up its mind. It was cloudy, with a few seconds of sunny intervals and drizzles of rain.

The event was organised by Rowena Castillo-Nicholls, Founder and Chair of Connect with Nature, RSPB Kernow Group Leader, and Publicity Officer of Cornwall Birds. Rob Nicholls led the field trip.

Coffee first, birds second

Before setting off, the group enjoyed a chat over coffee, tea, biscuits and chocolates. Then they headed out, later taking a side trip to St Anthony Head.

The effort paid off. At Ruan Lanihorne they recorded 30 species of birds. At St Anthony Head they added another 18, bringing the day’s total to 48 across the two locations.

Not a bad return for a morning that started under cloud.
