Met Office Issues Yellow Warning as Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Hit Cornwall

A yellow weather warning for rain and wind remains in place across Cornwall until 6pm today (Wednesday 12th November), with the Met Office warning of possible flooding and travel disruption.

Flooding and Travel Disruption Possible

The Met Office says heavy rain accompanied by strong southerly winds is likely to cause difficult driving conditions and may produce flooding in places.

According to the warning, flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible, and some coastal routes, sea fronts and communities could be affected by spray and large waves.

Bus and train services are also expected to be disrupted, with journey times taking longer due to spray and flooding on the roads. Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges are also possible, and some isolated short-term power cuts may occur.

Up to 80mm of Rain Forecast

The Met Office said outbreaks of light rain on Tuesday morning turned heavier and more persistent during the afternoon, accompanied by a strengthening southerly wind. Gusts exceeding gale force were possible along exposed south-facing coastal districts and over hills.

Although the wind and rain are likely to ease later this evening, further pulses of heavy rain could continue overnight and through much of Wednesday as the weather system slows down.

Rainfall totals are expected to reach 20–40mm widely, with 60–80mm possible in the wettest areas, particularly on the south-facing slopes of the moors. With already saturated ground, this could lead to flooding in a few spots and difficult driving conditions, especially during the evening commute.

Advice from the Met Office

The Met Office is urging people to check if their property could be at risk of flooding and prepare a flood plan and emergency kit if necessary.

Drivers are advised to check road conditions and public transport timetables before travelling, and to amend travel plans if needed.

The guidance also reminds people to prepare for possible power cuts by gathering torches, batteries, mobile phone chargers and essential items in advance.

The Met Office said people should stay up to date with forecasts as weather warnings can change quickly.

This yellow warning has a medium likelihood and a low impact, meaning while widespread disruption is not expected, the public should remain cautious and prepared.
