Cliff Road traders need Newquay’s support as works begin

Cliff Road is about to look and feel very different, and the traders along it want everyone to know the shops, the cafes and the chippy are staying open through it all.

What’s changing from this Monday

From this Monday, 7 September, the Mid Cornwall Metro works get under way, bringing significant changes to traffic around Cliff Road in Newquay. For a number of months there will be a one-way traffic diversion system, running from the Narrowcliff area, around Trenance Hill and back onto Cliff Road. It’s needed to let the works go ahead while keeping traffic moving as safely and efficiently as possible.

Newquay BID says the project has always attracted mixed public opinion, but now the works are actually going ahead, the biggest worry is the effect on the businesses that line Cliff Road. Those businesses are heading into what is already a challenging time of year, and the BID says they need support more than ever.

Free and extra parking to soften the blow

Some measures have been put in place to help. Newquay BID has been reassured that from the start of the works until the beginning of October, parking at Tolcarne Road car park will be free for the first hour. From October onwards, the car park becomes free all day.

There are also now more than 80 additional spaces available at Tolcarne Road, following work carried out ahead of the Mid Cornwall Metro scheme. Parking is also available at the railway station, where there is currently 30 minutes of free parking.

How you can help

The message from Newquay BID is simple. Keep visiting Cliff Road. Grab a coffee, have lunch, shop locally, treat yourself, and support the independent businesses that help make the town what it is.

In its post, Newquay BID put it plainly: “The works will be disruptive. There is no point pretending otherwise. But if we continue to support these businesses throughout the disruption, we can help them get through to the other side.”
