One in four people in Cornwall is 65 or over, and care is changing

Nobody likes to be the one who brings it up. Somewhere between Sunday lunch and the washing up, the question of what happens when Mum or Dad can no longer manage on their own tends to get pushed back another month. And then another.

In Cornwall, that conversation is coming round sooner for more families than almost anywhere else in the country.

Cornwall’s older population in numbers

Office for National Statistics mid-year population estimates put Cornwall among the areas of the UK with the highest share of older residents. Just over one in four people living in the county (26 per cent) are aged 65 or over. The national average is 19 per cent.

People are living longer than ever, and demand for social care is rising with it. That makes the question of how older people are supported to stay independent a pressing one for families across the county.

What person-led care means

Em Dean, Managing Director at care home provider Crystal Care Collection, believes expectations of later life have shifted.

“In recent years, expectations around later life have changed, with older generations focusing more on independence,” said Em. “Person-led care is one way that supports those wanting to stay active and maintain their daily freedoms. It allows people to continue doing the things that matter the most to them.”

The care home stereotype

Many people still picture moving into a care home as the moment independence ends. Em says that image is out of date.

“There are common, outdated stereotypes surrounding care homes, and misconceptions that older adults will lose their independence moving into a care home,” she said.

Under a person-led approach, care plans are drawn up with residents and their families, so residents decide how they spend their days and keep doing the things they enjoy. The focus covers mental wellbeing as well as physical care.

“Whilst it can feel like a big adjustment for those moving into care, this person-led approach means homes focus not just on physical care but residents’ mental wellbeing too,” said Em. “It’s important that everybody feels supported, comfortable and happy as they get older.”

Why the conversation is better had early

Choosing care for someone you love can feel overwhelming, and it is often treated as a subject best avoided. The result is that families can end up unclear about the options open to them.

“It’s becoming increasingly important to have open and honest conversations with family members when discussing plans for later life,” said Em. “With there being so many care options available, it is best to begin these conversations early to discuss all options and find the most appropriate one for you and your family.”

Once someone has moved into residential care, she says regular wellness checks and open communication with the home help families understand how their loved one is settling in.

Live music, painting and cream teas

Friendships and social contact play a big part in staying healthy in later life. Em points to staying in touch with family, keeping up old hobbies and joining local community clubs.

“This can look like a varied weekly programme, from live music events, to painting activities, or traditional Cornish cream tea afternoons,” she said. “Homes also come together for fundraising events supporting local causes, helping residential care to feel connected to the people around them and the wider Cornwall area.”

With such a large older population, Em sees a role for care providers and the wider Cornwall community alike in helping people live well beyond their physical health needs.

“Whilst care needs are important, ensuring residents’ happiness and comfort is also a priority,” she said. “We are centred around independence and living life to the fullest.”
