Where should Truro’s new homes go? Council survey wants your view

Where should the next new homes in Truro be built? What should they look like? And what’s missing from the streets around you right now?

Those are the questions Cornwall Council is putting to residents in a new survey on housing and life in Cornwall. For people in Truro, the answers will be used twice.

What the survey asks

The survey covers where new homes should be built, the types of homes needed and how they should be designed. It also asks about community facilities, green spaces, transport connections and support for the local economy.

It starts with a set of essential questions about housing needs, then moves on to some optional questions about life in Cornwall. Most are tick-box questions, with space to add comments if you want to. The topics include:

• who lives in your household, such as ages and household makeup
• your current housing situation, including home type, size and tenure
• whether you expect to move and what kind of home you might need
• what should be built in your area, and where
• the features that matter most in new homes
• what you value in your community, what’s missing and how you travel
• car ownership and travel choices
• work and employment, including home working

Why it matters for Truro

Responses will help inform Cornwall Council’s new Local Plan, which sets out where development should happen and what it should look like.

Answers from Truro residents will also be shared with Truro City Council. They’ll be used to help develop a Neighbourhood Priorities Statement for Truro, setting out what matters most to the community.

The council says Cornwall will need to deliver more homes, business spaces and infrastructure over the coming years. It also says it knows this “raises important questions and concerns for many local people.”

The feedback will help show how developer contributions (such as CIL and section 106 funding) should be spent. It could also support work on affordable housing, infrastructure, transport and funding bids.

Another chance to comment later

There will be a further opportunity to comment on Truro’s Neighbourhood Priorities Statement before it is submitted to Cornwall Council.
