Could Cornwall Finally Be Recognised in the Census?
Could Cornwall Finally Get Its Own Census Tick Box?
A petition calling for a dedicated “Cornish” tick box in the 2031 census is gaining attention, as supporters push for clearer recognition of Cornish identity.
What the Petition Is Asking For
The petition is asking for a “Cornish” option to be added to the national identity question in the next census.
At the moment, people who identify as Cornish have to write it in under the “Other” category. The proposed change would introduce a clear tick box instead.

Why It Matters
Details shared with the petition say the change would help the government feel more comfortable acknowledging a Cornish nation as the movement continues to grow.
It also states that Cornwall is seen by supporters as the fifth nation of the UK, and that a dedicated tick box would be a further step in recognising that.
The petition also highlights that awareness of Cornish identity remains low, even within Cornwall. It suggests that including a tick box could help improve understanding and allow more people to recognise and express that identity.
How Many Have Signed So Far
As of Sunday 29th March 2026, the petition has reached 1,222 signatures.
Supporters are continuing to encourage more people to sign as the campaign gathers momentum.
