Honouring Emily Hobhouse: A Special Talk and Celebration on Her 165th Birthday

A unique day of remembrance and community celebration is set to take place in St Ive Church, Liskeard on Saturday, 12th April, marking Emily Hobhouse’s 165th birthday with a series of free events, creative activities, and a chance to explore her legacy.

Timeline Talk by Author Elsabé Brits

A highlight of the day is a special talk by Elsabé Brits, a published author who will guide attendees through a timeline of Emily’s life, sharing key events and birthday anecdotes that span her incredible journey.

The talk takes place at St Ive Church from 11:00–11:45 AM, and admission is free. Space is limited, so booking is recommended.

Bake a Birthday Cake for Emily Hobhouse

As part of the celebrations, the community is invited to take part in a birthday cake baking competition at St Ive Church. There are two categories:

• Adult Division (Ages 18+)

• Child Division (Ages 17 and under)

Each entrant may submit one homemade cake inspired by Emily’s life and work. Cakes must be delivered to the church by 10:30 AM on the day. They’ll be judged on:

• Taste – Flavour, texture, and overall deliciousness

• Appearance – Creativity, neatness, and decoration

• Relevance – How well the cake reflects Emily Hobhouse’s story

Each entry must include the baker’s name and age, a list of ingredients, and optionally, a sentence or two about the inspiration behind the cake. Cakes will be available for purchase after judging, with all proceeds supporting St Ive Church.

For Passholders: Bust Unveiling & Birthday Reception

Passholders and their guests are invited to a special unveiling of the Emily Hobhouse bust at The Story of Emily. This will be followed by a relaxed reception featuring South African heritage dishes, birthday cake, and Victorian cocktails served in the on-site restaurant.

Let Your Voice Soar: Kite Decorating and Flying

Throughout April, visitors of all ages can join a kite decorating and flying tribute to Emily. In the Rectory courtyard, transformed into a magical workshop space with twinkling lights and candles, children can decorate their own kites with a message about what they admire about Emily or their own dreams to make a difference.

Kites will be available to purchase in the Retail area, and can be flown on-site throughout the month. A special kite-flying session is planned for Saturday, 12th April on The Mound, weather permitting. The exact time will be announced nearer the date.
