How Cornish with Clive began
The idea came from Clive Baker, a Cornish language teacher and Bard of the Cornish Gorseth, who was Chairman of Agan Tavas at the time. He wanted to record a set of introductory lessons as a Cornish podcast, and when it launched it was the first of its kind.
Alongside him was his student at the time, Mike Chappell, who was then a Redruth Councillor. Between them they recorded over 45 lessons, each around half an hour long.
Getting the vowels right
The lessons put a heavy focus on the sounds of the vowels in the Cornish dialect, with the aim of helping learners pronounce the language properly.
Cornish with Clive was first broadcast on KMF Radio, a community radio station that transmitted on the internet from a studio in Redruth.
Where to listen now
The podcast can still be heard on Mixcloud, starting with Cornish with Clive show one.
Every episode is also listed, with an optional download, on the Cowethas an Yeth Kernewek Cambron (Camborne Cornish Language Fellowship) website. The episodes can be found on the Bagas an Yeth Kernewek Resruth (Redruth Cornish Language Group) website too.
And Clive is still teaching. His Cornish classes run in Camborne on Thursday evenings.
