New Fire Fleet at Cornwall Airport Could Change Emergency Response

Cornwall Airport Newquay has unveiled three new aviation fire appliances as part of a major investment to strengthen its emergency response capability and support its sustainability ambitions.

The new vehicles include the 100th Rosenbauer Panther to be delivered in the UK and Republic of Ireland, marking a milestone for both the airport and Rosenbauer UK.

Faster response and improved capability

The three appliances will form a core part of the airport’s rescue and firefighting service, improving its ability to respond quickly and effectively to aircraft emergencies.

Each vehicle is equipped with HRET technology, known as High Reaching Extendable Turret, and can carry up to 12,000 litres of water along with specialist firefighting foam. The appliances are also capable of reaching incidents anywhere on the runway in under three minutes, which is a critical requirement for aviation firefighting.

They significantly enhance our ability to respond rapidly and effectively to any aircraft emergency, helping ensure the continued safety of passengers, crews and airport staff.”

Replacing older fleet

The new vehicles replace the airport’s original Panther fleet, which was introduced in 2008 when the site transitioned from military to civilian operations under Cornwall Council ownership.

Supporting a greener future

Alongside improved performance, the new fleet is also part of a 12 month trial using Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil as fuel. This renewable fuel can reduce lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 90 percent compared to conventional diesel.

Tim Dwelly, Cornwall Council cabinet member, said: “This investment underlines our commitment to the airport, which plays such a vital role in ensuring Cornwall’s connectivity and helping to unlock our economic potential.

“These appliances will not only ensure the continued safety of all those who use the airfield, including passengers, crews and airport staff, but they also represent a step towards a greener and cleaner future.”

Milestone delivery for Rosenbauer

The delivery is also significant for Rosenbauer UK, marking its 100th Panther supplied in the UK and Republic of Ireland.

Cornwall Airport Newquay plays an important role in regional connectivity, supporting passenger routes across the UK and Europe. It also supports critical services including Cornwall Air Ambulance and HM Coastguard search and rescue operations.
