South West Preview Screenings Announced for Mark Jenkin’s Rose of Nevada

Cornwall Filmmaker’s New Ghostly Drama Touring Cinemas Early

Film fans across Cornwall and the wider South West will have the chance to watch an early preview of a new film from BAFTA winning filmmaker Mark Jenkin weeks before its official release.

The ghostly time slip drama Rose of Nevada will be shown at a series of preview screenings with live Q&A sessions hosted by Mark Jenkin, beginning on Tuesday 7th April in Newlyn.

The film is not due to go on general release across the UK and Ireland until Friday 24th April, but audiences in Cornwall, Exeter and Bristol will be able to see it earlier during the special preview tour.

Preview tour announced on St Piran’s Day

The announcement was made on Cornwall’s St Piran’s Day, highlighting the film’s strong links to the county where it was made.

Director Mark Jenkin said:

“It’s perfect timing announcing the Rose of Nevada preview tour dates on St Piran’s Day, the day of Cornwall’s patron saint. The film was made in Cornwall, working with Cornwall’s abundance of talent and is rooted in the communities and culture of this place. So, I’m thrilled to be on the road personally taking Rose of Nevada out to audiences across Cornwall, the South West and beyond, ahead of its official UK/Ireland release.”

The tour begins in Mark Jenkin’s home town at Newlyn Filmhouse, before travelling to cinemas across Cornwall and the wider South West.

Cornwall locations and local talent

Rose of Nevada is a 114 minute film rated 15 and stars George MacKay, Callum Turner and Irish actor Francis Magee.

George MacKay is known for films including For Those in Peril and 1917, while Callum Turner has appeared in The Boys in the Boat and Masters of the Air. Francis Magee has recently appeared in the television series Kin.

The film has already been screened at selected international film festivals including Venice, Toronto, New York and Glasgow.

Like Mark Jenkin’s earlier films BAIT (2019) and ENYS MEN (2022), the production was shot on 16mm using a Bolex clockwork camera.

The story also draws heavily on Cornwall itself, using Cornish coastal locations and a Cornish crew. Cornwall based actors Edward Rowe and Mary Woodvine appear in the film, and students from Falmouth University took part in work experience roles behind the scenes.

A mysterious fishing boat returns

The film’s title comes from a fishing boat called Rose of Nevada, which reappears in its old Cornish harbour thirty years after it and its crew were lost at sea during a storm.

Villagers who remember the past believe the boat returning could change the community’s fortunes and decide it should go back out to sea.

Jobless young father Nick, played by George MacKay, and drifter Liam, played by Callum Turner, join captain Murgey, played by Francis Magee, on the voyage.

When they return with a hold full of fish, something strange has happened. The harbour is bustling and they are greeted as if they are the original crew from decades earlier.

Rose of Nevada was directed by Mark Jenkin from a story co created by him and Mary Woodvine. It was produced by Denzil Monk for Bosena, developed with Film4 and co financed by the BFI with National Lottery funding and Film4. The film will be distributed across the UK and Ireland by BFI Distribution.
