Fowey RNLI Volunteers Qualify as Launch Authorities

Two volunteers at Fowey RNLI have stepped into a vital position that plays a key role in emergency callouts.

In February 2026, Malcolm Richardson and Mark Strudwick both successfully passed out as Launch Authorities for the station.

Long Service and Experience

Mark Strudwick first joined the Fowey lifeboat crew in 2007. He spent 10 years on the Trent all-weather lifeboat, initially serving as deck crew before later becoming a navigator. After returning to the station last year, he has now completed his training to take on the Launch Authority role.

Malcolm Richardson brings nearly three decades of experience, having been part of the Fowey lifeboat crew for 28 years. Alongside this, he works as an Area Technical Manager for the RNLI. His new qualification means he now joins the station’s Launch Authority team.

A Crucial Role in Emergencies

When a 999 call is received by the coastguard, the Launch Authority is the first point of contact. They are responsible for deciding whether a lifeboat should be launched.

If a launch is approved, the coastguard will page the volunteer crew. At the same time, the Launch Authority heads to the station, gathers information about the incident, and prepares to brief the lifeboat helm while helping assemble the crew.

Fowey’s Lifeboat Operations Manager, Paul Gamble, said: “Very well done to Mark and Malcolm and thank you for the commitment and hard work you have put into achieving your new roles as LAs.”
