Top Coaching, Exclusive Pathways and Unparalleled Opportunities Coming September 2025

Launceston College has unveiled plans for its brand new Elite Sports Academies, a major step in helping young athletes reach their potential. Launching in September 2025, the academies are designed to create a pathway for students who are passionate and already competing at club level across a range of sports.

Focused Support Across Five Core Sports

Part of Athena Learning Trust, Launceston College’s offer will cater to boys’ and girls’ football, boys’ and girls’ rugby, and cricket. With just 20 places available in each academy, students will benefit from highly personalised coaching from expert coaches, including those from PAFC and Cornish Pirates.

As part of the programme, students will:

  • Take part in strength and conditioning sessions before school, focusing on fitness, rest and recovery.
  • Join after school training sessions delivered by academy-level coaches.
  • Receive enhanced PE lessons during the school day, run by specialist academy coaches.
  • Enter cup competitions and additional leagues to showcase their talents.
  • Enjoy special trips, including visits to professional matches and a one-night residential training experience at St George’s Park.

Beyond the Core

In addition to the main sports academies, Launceston College will also provide an individual athlete academy and lighter support for athletes involved in sports such as athletics, tennis and swimming. These students will have access to strength and conditioning, as well as help with travel and subsidies to attend competitions.

Close Links with Local Clubs

To help ensure the best possible pathway for each student, Launceston College will work closely with local clubs including Launceston Rugby Club and Southgate and Launceston Football Clubs. This will provide young athletes with comprehensive support as they balance their academic and sporting commitments.

Open to Year 7 from September 2025

The Elite Sports Academies will be available to Year 7 students joining Launceston College from September 2025, with plans to expand to other year groups in the future. Entry will be based on students already playing at club level to ensure each participant is ready to embrace the challenge.

A Word from the Principal

Matthew Thompson, Principal at Launceston College, shared his enthusiasm for the new offer:

“We’re excited to offer an environment where our students can truly excel. Our new Elite Sports Academies offer will not only provide top-tier coaching but also encourage personal development, discipline, and teamwork. We want to give our athletes the tools to succeed, both in sport and in life.

“I want to say a massive thank you to all the different sports teams that have agreed to spend time working with our students. The coaching they will receive from professional players will undoubtedly be both invaluable and inspiring.”

Launceston College Rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted

Launceston College continues to be recognised for its strong educational provision. The school is rated Good by Ofsted across all key areas, with inspectors noting that “All pupils, including those with SEND, follow a broad and ambitious curriculum… Pupils build on what they already know.” Sixth-form students were also highlighted for pursuing qualifications aligned with their future goals.
