Three Mawnan Pupils Are the First Names on This New Silver Cup

Matilda, Tilly and Herbie now have their names engraved on a brand new silver cup at Mawnan Bowling Club. The three Year 5 pupils are the first ever winners of the club’s Year 5 Triples Cup, and the trophy was theirs after several closely contested ends in the final.

A new competition built with the local school

The cup was run in partnership with the local primary school. The idea was to introduce young people to bowls and to strengthen ties across the community.

Nineteen children took part. They were split into two round robin leagues, each made up of three triples teams. Every team played each of the others in its league once, and the triples side with the highest combined score in its league went through to the final.

Weeks of coaching on the green

Winning the cup was the end point of coaching that ran across several weeks of the final term, out on the bowling greens. The school was assigned five club members, who showed the pupils how to bowl, which side faces in, how to stand on the mat, how to aim and how to score.

Club Chairman Malcolm Dearnley said the standard the junior bowlers reached was outstanding.

“The competition offered the children the opportunity to learn new skills, participate in friendly competition, and delivered some unforgettable moments,” Malcolm said.

He thinks this is only the start. “One thing is certain: this inaugural event has set a strong foundation for what promises to be a long-standing tradition in the school’s calendar.”
