There is a new studio at the Killacourt in Newquay where the jewellery you take home starts life as a shell picked up off the beach.

Cornwall Silver Studio has set up at the Killacourt in Newquay, run by Belle, who teaches beginner-friendly workshops where you make your own silver pieces by hand. Newquay Town Council has welcomed the new arrival, describing it as a creative, community-focused business.

The sessions are pitched at anyone fancying something a bit different, whether that is trying a new hobby, a catch-up with friends or a day out with a difference.

What is silver clay?

The workshops use silver clay, a soft material made from tiny recycled silver particles mixed with water and a natural binder. The studio says it handles much like pottery clay, so you can roll it, shape it, imprint textures into it and mould it into your own design.

Once a piece has dried, it is gently fired. The binder burns away, the silver particles fuse together and what is left is pure fine silver. The studio describes the material as safe, beginner-friendly and suitable for all ages and skill levels, with a finished keepsake made in a single session.

What you can make

Cornwall Silver Studio leans into its coastal setting. Sessions begin by collecting shells from the beaches nearby, with Fistral, Porth, Watergate and Towan among those name-checked, before heading back to the studio to imprint them into jewellery.

Belle also runs botanical imprint jewellery sessions and nose imprint sessions for pet owners, including the studio’s dog nose pendants. According to the studio, every piece is one of a kind, from the shell you choose to the hands that shape it.

Spaces this week

A few spaces were still available this week at the time of the announcement:

  • Sip & Silver on Friday 12th June
  • Sea shell pendant workshop on Saturday 13th June

You can book classes through the Cornwall Silver Studio website
