Twenty-two bird species counted at Towan Head, Newquay

Sixteen people spent a morning on the cliffs at Towan Head and came away with a tally most passing walkers would never clock.

The count

A group of sixteen nature and wildlife enthusiasts gathered for a birdwatching trip at Towan Head in Newquay. Between them they recorded twenty-two species of birds. The conditions helped. There was sun, warmth and a light breeze coming in off the sea.

Butterflies on the wing too

Birds were not the only thing worth watching. The group also logged three species of butterfly. Those were the Clouded Yellow, the Painted Lady and the Meadow Brown.

Who ran it

The trip was organised by Rowena Castillo-Nicholls, founder and chair of Connect with Nature, RSPB Kernow Group Leader and Publicity Officer of Cornwall Birds. Rob Nicholls led the group in the field.

The morning finished over coffee, tea and biscuits.
