Thomas and Tommy find their forever homes in Cornwall

Months ago, Thomas and Tommy arrived in Cornwall as two of 65 dogs caught up in one of the largest welfare cases RSPCA Cornwall Branch has handled. This week, they became the last pair from that group to walk out with a family of their own, closing a chapter the whole team has been working towards since the day they arrived.

A welfare case involving 65 dogs

Thomas and Tommy were among the dogs who came into the branch’s care earlier this year, as part of a welfare situation involving 65 dogs in total. The branch took in 40 of them, a group that included pregnant mums, mothers with tiny puppies, and dogs who needed significant veterinary treatment and rehabilitation before they could even begin to think about a new home.

Now, after months of care, patience and rehabilitation, Thomas and Tommy have both been rehomed this week. It means every terrier from that original intake who came into the branch’s care has now found somewhere to live.

For the team who supported the dogs through their recovery, watching the final two begin their new lives is a moment they had been building towards for a long time.

Tommy’s long road to confidence

Tommy needed longer than most to learn that the world did not have to be frightening. He could be nervous around unfamiliar people and situations, and getting him past that took a calm, patient approach rather than any quick fix.

One of his biggest milestones was finding the courage to explore the centre’s paddocks, somewhere that had once felt completely overwhelming to him. Over the months that followed, his confidence grew bit by bit, and the affectionate, loyal dog underneath began to show itself.

Thomas completed his own rehabilitation journey alongside him. This week, both boys took the step everyone at the branch had been hoping for. They went home.

A spokesperson for RSPCA Cornwall Branch said: “Watching Thomas and Tommy leave this week has been incredibly emotional. When these dogs first arrived, our priority wasn’t finding them homes as quickly as possible. It was giving each of them the time, care and rehabilitation they needed so that, when that day came, they had the best possible chance of succeeding.

“Thomas and Tommy were the final two terriers from this intake still waiting, so seeing them both begin their new lives in the same week feels like the end of a very special chapter.”

From an urgent appeal to a happy ending

The story of the dogs captured the attention of the Cornish community when RSPCA Cornwall Branch appealed for help with the considerable cost of caring for such a large number of animals at once.

One of the dogs, Angel, needed particularly significant veterinary intervention after arriving with severe muscle wastage in one of her back legs, caused by an old, untreated problem. The leg could not be saved, and Angel underwent amputation surgery to free her from the pain she had been living with.

The public rallied behind Angel and the other dogs, donating towards veterinary treatment, food, medication, rehabilitation and their ongoing care. Angel adapted to life on three legs and has since been rehomed herself.

Now, with Thomas and Tommy leaving this week, the branch can celebrate another important milestone in the story.

“There were no quick fixes for these dogs. Rehabilitation takes time, particularly for animals who have had difficult starts in life. Some needed medical treatment, while others needed to learn confidence, trust and many of the everyday things we often take for granted.

“That’s why Thomas and Tommy going home means so much. This isn’t simply the end of their time with us. It’s the beginning of the lives we’ve been preparing them for.”

A huge thank you to Cornwall

RSPCA Cornwall Branch would like to thank everyone who donated to the original appeal and to Angel’s subsequent surgery appeal, as well as the foster carers, adopters, staff, volunteers and supporters who followed and shared the dogs’ journeys.

As an independently registered, self-funded local RSPCA Cornwall charity, the branch has to raise the money required to provide the veterinary treatment, rehabilitation and everyday care needed by the animals it supports.

The branch added: “Our community helped make this possible. When 40 dogs suddenly needed us, people donated, shared our appeals, offered foster homes and followed their progress. That support allowed our team to give these dogs the time they needed rather than rushing their recovery.

“To everyone who has been part of their story, thank you. Thomas and Tommy going home this week is a happy ending we can all celebrate.”

More dogs and cats still waiting

While this chapter may have reached its conclusion, many other dogs and cats remain in the care of RSPCA Cornwall Branch and are searching for their own forever homes.
