Truro Mayor Chris Wells on a month of farewells and fresh starts

A boules tournament, a new minister, a funeral and a 9/11 commemoration. For the Mayor of Truro, September covered a lot of ground.

Cllr Chris Wells has shared his monthly update through Truro City Council, looking back on a month that took him from a new pétanque piste in Truro to civic occasions in Hayle and Torpoint.

“As we head into autumn, I reflect on the month I have just had, which has been filled with a mixture of events,” he said.

Boules and a warm welcome

The month opened with the Eddie Jones Boules Tournament, played on the new pétanque piste and hosted by Morlaix Twinning.

The Mayor was also invited to Truro Methodist Church for the Welcome Service for its new minister, Rev Rory Dalgliesh.

“I would like to extend a very warm welcome to Rev Rory as he begins his ministry in Truro,” he said.

Remembering Terry Pascoe

There was a sadder occasion too. Chris attended the funeral of former Truro City Councillor Terry Pascoe.

He described it as “a poignant occasion” which “provided an opportunity to remember his service to the city and to the people he represented.”

25 years since 9/11, remembered in Hayle

The Mayor travelled to Hayle for the commemoration marking the 25th anniversary of 9/11. Rick Rescorla was also remembered at the event.

Catching up with fellow mayors in Torpoint

Then it was across the county to Torpoint for the town’s Civic Service, where the Mayor and Mayoress of Truro joined civic leaders from other towns.

“It was wonderful to meet with fellow Mayors and catch up with them,” Chris said.

What civic life is about

Looking back on the month as a whole, he said the mix of occasions had stood out.

“All these events have been a reminder of what civic life is about: celebrating new chapters, remembering those who have gone before us, recognising service and bringing communities together at significant moments,” he said. “It is a privilege to be part of these occasions and to represent the city and its people.”
