Truro’s tenth City Clean Up returns this October

Cable ties on lamp posts, chewing gum ground into the cobbles, faded signage nobody’s got round to washing down. It builds up quietly in a city centre, and once a year an army of volunteers in hi-vis and rubber gloves turns up to sort it out.

A tenth year for the City Clean Up

Truro BID, working with Newham BID, is holding its tenth City Clean Up this autumn, on Friday 16 and Saturday 17 October. The idea is a simple one: get as many Truro businesses and organisations as possible to give up an hour, or whatever time they can spare, to help clean and tidy the city.

Ten years of the same event says something about how many hands it takes to keep a city centre looking cared for, cobbles, cathedral steps and all.

How Truro businesses can take part

The City Centre day falls on Friday 16 October, and Truro BID wants to hear from any business or colleagues keen to muck in. Jobs on the list include washing down signage, cutting off old cable ties and litter picking, and an hour of anyone’s time is enough to make a difference.

Anyone interested should email [email protected] as soon as possible, and by Friday 2 October at the latest. High visibility vests, gloves, bags and litter pickers are all supplied, with the kit provided thanks to Clean Cornwall.

Community groups join in around the city

The City Clean Up isn’t confined to the centre. Local Community Volunteers are organising their own litter picks in the neighbourhoods around Truro to run alongside it, and Damien Richards, Community Development Officer at Truro City Council, will be inviting community groups from across the city to take part too.

Damien’s invitation means the two days could end up pulling in everyone from shop staff wiping down their own bit of pavement to volunteers working through a residential street a mile from Lemon Quay. Whether this year matches the reach of the previous nine will come down to how many people answer that email before 2 October.
