Silent soldier now stands guard at Porthleven War Memorial
Look past the granite cross on the hill above the harbour and there’s a new figure keeping watch. A black silhouette of a soldier, head bowed, rifle at his side, standing quietly at the edge of the memorial garden.
It’s a gift. And the people behind it are better known for litter picks than for Remembrance.

A gift from Porthleven Environment Group
Porthleven Town Council has thanked Porthleven Environment Group, who kindly gifted the council the soldier silhouette as part of the town’s tribute at the War Memorial.
The council said the addition will help it “honour and remember all those who served and sacrificed so much for our freedom”.
“We are extremely grateful to Porthleven Environment Group for their generosity and for helping to create a fitting tribute in our community,” the council said.
A memorial looking out over the harbour
The memorial is a tall granite Celtic cross set on a stepped base, looking down over the boats moored in Porthleven harbour. Its inscription remembers the men of Porthleven who gave their lives for their country in the Great Wars, 1914 to 1918 and 1939 to 1945, with names carved into the side of the base.
Painted pebbles and small stones have been left along its steps. A small wooden poppy cross is already planted in the bed beside the new silhouette.
With Remembrance Sunday falling this Sunday (8 November), the soldier will be in place when the town gathers.
The council’s message ended with four words. “We will remember them.”
