80 People, 155 Bags of Rubbish: Truro’s Big City Clean Up
Businesses, organisations and residents across Truro and Newham joined forces on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th March to help tidy streets, green spaces and neighbourhoods across the city during the latest Truro City Clean Up.
The ninth clean-up event was organised by Truro BID in association with Newham BID. Over two days, businesses, community groups and volunteers worked together on litter picking, sign washing, sticker removal and general street tidying.
By the end of the event, more than 80 people had taken part and a total of 155 bags of rubbish had been collected.

Businesses and Volunteers Join Forces
Friday’s clean-up began with a litter pick along Tregolls Road before volunteers moved into the city centre to remove cable ties, clean signs and remove stickers. Another litter pick took place in the afternoon at Newham.
Businesses and organisations from across Truro took part, including Ask, Barclays, CLEAR, Cornwall Council, Francis Clark, LiveWest and Natwest.
From Newham, participants included Biffa, Kartha Commercial Cleaning, MJ Medical, RRL and St Petroc’s.
Support also came from Truro City Council’s Countryside Rangers, Community Development Officer Damien Richards and local volunteer community leader Paul Caruana, who helped bring community groups on board for the clean-up.
Community Groups Lead Saturday Efforts
On Saturday, community groups across Truro organised their own clean-up efforts.
Friends of Daubuz Moor focused on litter removal in the nature area, while the City Life Church and Trelander and St. Clements Community Association arranged a litter pick in Trelander. The Kenwyn Community Association organised a clean-up in their area covering Kenwyn Church Road to Rosedale.
Volunteers also carried out targeted litter picking around the Hendra and Penair School area.
In Truro city centre, a team focused on further sign washing and sticker removal. The group included Kartha Commercial Cleaning, MP Jayne Kirkham, Truro in Bloom volunteers and local residents Bryan Skinner, Nick James, Rich Estlick and Alan Jones.
Organisers Thank Volunteers
Truro BID Manager Alun Jones said:
“We are delighted that some of Truro’s businesses and organisations gave up their time and volunteered for City Clean Up. Thanks to everyone involved in sprucing up the city and special thanks to Bryan Skinner and Nick James for their involvement.”
Sian Knights, BID Manager for Newham, added:
“City Clean Up was another fantastic opportunity to work together with Truro BID and make a real difference. We’re incredibly grateful to all the businesses and volunteers who helped Newham look cleaner and feel more welcoming.”
Anna Cormie, Countryside Ranger at Truro City Council, said:
“It was great to have a group of people come out to support Friends of Daubuz Moor taking part in the Truro City Clean Up event and caring for our local wild spaces. Thank you to all involved in the event for helping to keep the city and its wild spaces clean.”
Damien Richards from Truro City Council said:
“Community litter picks are more than keeping an area clean, it is a way to bring the community together. We often have people take part that have never met before with a broad age range from the very young to the much older.”
Local volunteer community leader Paul Caruana added:
“Just doing a little, collectively, sees great results! Litter picking produces instant outcomes, there for all to see. Together we can make a difference.”

Unusual Finds During the Clean Up
Alongside the bags of rubbish collected, volunteers also recovered 15 ‘lost’ road signs and cones which were returned to the Cormac depot.
Some of the more unusual items found included a bike, car parts, a pushchair and even a kitchen sink.
Keeping Truro’s Streets Safe
As well as organising events such as the City Clean Up, Truro BID also funds the Truro Rangers security resource. The Rangers carry out 46 hours of foot patrols each week to help deter low level crime and violence against shop workers.
Truro BID says another City Clean Up is planned either later this year or in spring 2027.
