Pensioner Sentenced to 22 Years for Child Sexual Abuse Offences
A pensioner has been jailed for 22 years after being convicted of rape and sexual abuse offences involving two children.
Francis Wells, 81, of Barnoldswick in Lancashire, appeared at Truro Crown Court on Tuesday 7th April for sentencing. He had been found guilty of two rapes of a child, two indecent assaults and two indecency with a child charges.
The court heard that the abuse took place mainly in Millbrook during the 1980s and 1990s. It was said to have often involved threats to prevent the victims from speaking out.

During the hearing, it was revealed that Francis groomed his victims before carrying out the offences. The abuse had a significant and prolonged psychological impact on both victims.
Judge Simon Carr described the offences as “brutal” and said the impact had been “devastating”, affecting every aspect of the victims’ lives. He also commented on the courage shown by the victims and highlighted Francis’ lack of remorse.
Police Praise Victims’ Courage
Police Staff Investigator Jo Wilson said:
“I would like to commend the victims in this case who were so brave in coming forward in the beginning and who then have continued to support the Police during what became a lengthy investigation.
“Due to their courage in giving evidence, justice has truly been served culminating in the Judge passing a sentence that will, in all likelihood, mean the offender will never leave prison again.
“I would like to reassure victims of historic abuse that you will be listened to, and we will do all we can to investigate and help and support you moving forward.”
