St Ives Community Orchard Participates in RSPB Big Birdwatch, Records Diverse Bird Species
In a recent birdwatching event organised by the St Ives Community Orchard & Nature Reserve, enthusiasts gathered to participate in the RSPB Big Birdwatch. The event, led by Viv Stratton, was a success with a variety of bird species spotted in the area.
The participants recorded an impressive array of birds during their observation. The list included 20 starlings, 1 crow, 4 wood pigeons, 1 wren, 1 robin, 1 magpie, 1 songthrush, 15 long-tailed tits, 1 collared dove, 3 goldfinches, and 1 gull. The birdwatching rules stipulate that only birds that have landed can be recorded at any one time, so it was noted that more of each species were actually observed during the event.
The RSPB Big Birdwatch provides an opportunity for bird enthusiasts and nature lovers to contribute to a nationwide citizen science project. The data collected from such events is invaluable for tracking the health and trends of bird populations across the UK.
The event at St Ives Community Orchard & Nature Reserve not only contributed to this important environmental research but also offered a chance for community members to engage with nature and enjoy the diversity of birdlife in their local area. Thanks to the guidance of Viv Stratton, the group was able to identify and record a significant number of bird species, highlighting the rich biodiversity present in the region.
