Emily Barr to Release New YA Novel in May
A new young adult novel by Emily Barr is set to be released on 21st May, offering readers a twist-filled story that begins in Cornwall before heading to the French Riviera.
Lies We Told This Summer is described as a true-crime murder mystery with a romantic twist, aimed at fans of titles such as We Were Liars and The Reappearance of Rachel Price. Published by Penguin, the book follows a dangerous summer that changes lives.
From Cornwall to the Riviera
The story centres on Cat, who seizes the chance to leave Cornwall and spend the summer with wealthy family friends on the French Riviera. There, she meets a group of people who appear carefree.
Among them is Henry, who stands out to her. The two quickly form a connection, but it becomes clear that Henry is hiding secrets. The circumstances surrounding the death of his mother years earlier raise questions.
When Cat is invited to stay at Henry’s countryside mansion in France, she begins to look into past crimes, hoping to uncover the truth. However, not everyone wants the case to be investigated.
A Summer Story with Dark Themes
The novel blends elements of romance, mystery and suspense, with a focus on themes such as trust, power and hidden truths. It also draws on the popularity of true crime, including podcasts, as part of its storytelling.
Set against a European summer backdrop, the book explores friendship, first love and the challenges of navigating new environments while uncovering darker secrets.
