Why London Workers Are Quietly Buying Homes in Cornwall

The capital still pays the bills, but the South West is where more and more Londoners want to actually live.

That is the picture painted by housebuilder Cavanna Homes, which says interest from London-based buyers across its South West developments has stayed strong, with many now splitting their time between office-based roles in the city and a lifestyle rooted in the coast or countryside.

A Lifestyle Choice, Not Just A Money One

Hannah Newnes, Sales and Marketing Director at Cavanna Homes, said buyers are increasingly chasing the best of both worlds.

“They are still connected to London through their careers, but are choosing to put down roots somewhere that offers a completely different pace of life,” Hannah said.

“For many, it is about creating a balance. They might spend part of the week in the city, but they want to come home to open space, fresh air and a strong sense of community. That is something the South West offers in abundance.”

She added that affordability is no longer the main driver. “What is particularly interesting is that this is no longer just about affordability, although that is still a factor. It is a conscious lifestyle decision. Buyers are thinking much more carefully about how and where they want to live, not just where they need to be for work.”

Where The Buyers Are Going

Cavanna says hybrid working has reshaped how people think about commuting, shifting the pattern away from daily travel to more occasional journeys into the capital.

Two developments are reportedly attracting particular interest from this group of buyers. Warmwell Rise in Crossways and Bellevue in Bude are pulling in people who want access to the coast and countryside while still being able to reach larger towns, cities and transport links when work demands it.

For many of these buyers, the appeal is being able to spend weekends by the coast, or mornings walking in the countryside, without giving up a career in London.

Hannah said hybrid working has made something possible that simply was not before.

“There is a real sense that people no longer want to choose between lifestyle and career. The rise of hybrid working has made that possible in a way it simply was not before.”

“We are seeing buyers who value being able to spend their weekends by the coast, or their mornings walking in the countryside, while still maintaining fulfilling careers. That shift is having a lasting impact on how people think about home.”

Cavanna Homes expects the pattern to keep shaping buyer behaviour across lifestyle-led locations in the South West.
