Hayle Runners claim Treggy 7 double as Paull wins again

Emma Paull arrived at the start line in Launceston just as the field was already moving off. By the finish, seven miles later, she had beaten every other woman in it, and Hayle Runners had both team trophies to bring home as well.

Thirty-six Hayle Runners took on the seven-mile road race last Sunday (6 September), organised by Launceston Road Runners as the 12th event of the 2026 Cornwall Grand Prix series. It turned into one of the club’s strongest outings of the year, with victory in the ladies’ team competition, victory in the men’s, and Paull completing the set with the overall women’s win.

A dash to the start line

Having arrived as the race was already getting under way, Paull spent the opening stretch working her way through a field of several hundred runners rather than settling into her own pace from the gun. She crossed the line in 45:05, good enough for 19th place overall and first lady home. It was Paull’s second successive Cornwall Grand Prix victory, a month after winning Sticker 5, and it also secured her the Female 40-44 age category.

Green Army retain the ladies’ title

Paull’s run set up another good day for Hayle’s women. Gail Aspden, Tear Rogers, Fiona O’Neill, Corinne Gerrard and Emily Bennett joined her in the scoring six, enough to take first place in the ladies’ team competition for the club known as the Green Army. Fiona was third in the Female 40-44 category behind Paull, and Gail finished second in the Female 55-59s.

Millington leads the men to victory

The men’s team returned home with the win too. Daniel Millington led Hayle home in fifth place overall, the fastest time recorded by any Hayle Runner on the day in 41:43. Francis Malone-Lee, Liam O’Neill, Neil Hayhurst, Jake Summers and Steven Wherry completed the winning six, putting both team titles in Hayle’s hands.

Nine age-category prizes for Hayle Runners

The individual prizes went well beyond the two overall wins. Daniel took third in the Under 35 category and Liam was third among the Male 35-39s. Francis won the Male 45-49 category, Ian Curnow was third in the Male 55-59s, Steven won the Male 60-64 category and Jon Eldon claimed another victory in the Male 65-69s. Margaret Clark also had cause to celebrate, recording a new course personal best at Treggy.

Hayle Runners chairman Richard Collett said: “Emma apparently decided that simply racing seven miles wasn’t enough of a challenge, so added getting to the start at the last possible moment and working her way through a field of several hundred runners. To still come away as first lady is a remarkable performance.

“More broadly, winning both team competitions is another excellent result for the club. We’ve had some very strong performances throughout this year’s Grand Prix, but what continues to stand out is the depth across both teams. Nine age-category prizes on top of the two team wins made this another very successful trip.”
