Cornish Pirates Hooker Morgan Nelson Heads to Gloucester Rugby

In a week that marks Morgan Nelson’s 25th birthday, the Cornish Pirates’ hooker is making headlines for more than just his milestone. The Herefordshire-born former Wales Under-18s player has officially signed a contract with Gloucester Rugby, marking the next chapter in his career.

Impressive Track Record at the Pirates

Morgan first joined the Cornish Pirates towards the end of the 2021/22 season, debuting in two matches. Since then, his impact has been significant. The dynamic hooker has accumulated an impressive 49 appearances for the Pirates, scoring 29 tries along the way.

Paver on Nelson’s Departure

Cornish Pirates’ joint head coach Alan Paver expressed his support for Morgan’s decision, despite the timing being less than ideal for the club.

“We are pleased as punch that Morgan has got this opportunity. I know people will say it is probably not the right time for the Cornish Pirates, but it is the right time for him. He has been fully committed to the club whilst in Cornwall and establishing himself as a Championship player has now been earmarked to push on,” said Alan.

Alan also praised Morgan’s abilities on the field, highlighting his strong set piece play and his contribution with the ball.

“During Morgan’s relatively short time in Cornwall, we have seen that his set piece is a strength, as has been his contribution around the field with ball in hand. He is also an extremely good defender who just knows the game really well, therefore overall it is the right time to test himself at the next level.”

Nelson’s Response

Morgan himself expressed his excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to join Gloucester.

“I am naturally pleased to have been offered a contract by Gloucester for the remainder of this season, which will give me an opportunity to prove myself there. Also, I have been extremely grateful to the Cornish Pirates for the opportunity that they gave me, and I have been proud to represent such a big club,” Morgan said.

He also extended his thanks to his coaches, supporters, and sponsor ARW Scaffold Contracting Limited for their support during his time at the club.

A Strong Rugby Background

Morgan’s rugby journey began with Ledbury youth team and Hereford. Educated at John Kyle High School and Hartpury College, Morgan continued his development at Cardiff Metropolitan University, where he played in the BUCS Super Rugby team. Before joining the Pirates, he had stints with Worcester and Gloucester Academy, as well as the Hartpury College AASE squad.

Morgan’s signing with Gloucester marks an exciting new opportunity to test his skills at a higher level, while leaving behind a strong legacy with the Cornish Pirates.

Will Gloucester prove to be the next step for this talented hooker, or will the Pirates feel the sting of his departure in the coming months?
