Pirates Hold on To Top Spot

By Phil Westren

Penryn 21 – Pirates Amateurs 30

Travelling to the Memorial Ground at Penryn on Saturday as the leaders of Counties1 Tribute Western West, the Pirates Amateurs expected a tough encounter, which it indeed was. However, this ultimately bonus point providing victory sees the ‘Ams’ hold on to top spot with just two games to go.

Lock Jack Truen scored a first half try for Penryn, which was converted by full-back Rob Banks, but tries from scrum-half Rhodri McAtee and lock Ben Martin, plus two penalties kicked by full-back Ben Wragg, made the score 7-16 in favour of the Pirates at halftime.

The home side scored two more tries in the second period through centre James Salisbury and hooker Ryan Burley, to which Banks also added the extras, whilst wing John Tyler and McAtee crossed the line for the visitors, with both scores being converted by Wragg.

Commenting after the game, Cornish Pirates’ head coach Murray Westren said:

“The Memorial Ground at Penryn is a tough place to go, and they are a proud outfit.

“It was a good win nonetheless, and despite lacking a little cohesion at times the overall effort and physicality was very good.

“In particular, there were a couple of spells either side of halftime when we managed to put some good rugby together and, importantly, get what proved a decent lead in the game.”
