RFU Approves Restructuring of Cornish Pirates and Penzance & Newlyn RFC

Demerger Clears the Way for New Chapter in Cornish Rugby

The Rugby Football Union has approved a major restructuring of the Cornish Pirates and its associated clubs, following applications and agreement from all sides.

Separate Annual General Meetings were held by the Cornish Pirates, the Pirates Amateurs, and Penzance & Newlyn RFC, resulting in a significant demerger. The decision will see Penzance & Newlyn RFC separate from the Cornish Pirates and merge with the Pirates Amateurs, who will adopt the Penzance & Newlyn RFC name.

As part of the reorganisation, the Pirates Amateurs’ league position will transfer to Penzance & Newlyn RFC, which will now compete in Regional 2 South West as the club’s 1st XV.

Cornish Pirates to Stand Alone

The changes also mean that Kernow Sport Ltd, trading as Cornish Pirates, will now operate as an entirely independent club. As a result, the Cornish Pirates become a standalone voting member of the RFU and a new member of Cornwall RFU, while retaining their status in the second tier of English rugby – recently rebranded as The Champ.

According to the RFU’s Governance Committee, they were content to approve the following:

• The transfer of the league position of Pirates Amateurs to Penzance & Newlyn RFC (with Pirates Amateurs becoming their 1st XV)

• The demerger of Kernow Sport Ltd (t/a Cornish Pirates) from Penzance & Newlyn RFC

• The Cornish Pirates’ application for voting membership of the RFU

Clearer Identities, Bigger Opportunities

Speaking on behalf of Penzance & Newlyn RFC, Chairman Peter Whyte said:

“We look forward to the next chapter and to the continued success of both clubs. This restructure creates a clear identity for each organisation and opens the door to new opportunities – particularly around funding and access to grants – which will benefit rugby across our community.

“I’d like to thank everyone involved in making this possible, including the RFU, Cornwall RFU, and the leadership teams at all three clubs.

“Also, I want to acknowledge the incredible work done by Jack Nicholas, Scott Dugdale, and the Pirates Amateurs committee, who have built a fantastic team rooted in the local community, and it will now be very exciting to see Penzance & Newlyn’s First and Second XVs take the field in the club’s 80th year.

“Finally, I wish Sally, Gav, Paves, the new ownership group, and the Cornish Pirates every success moving forward.”

Cornish Pirates Remain Ambitious

Cornish Pirates CEO Sally Pettipher also spoke about the decision:

“It’s a bittersweet moment separating from our founder, but each club knows the benefits this will bring. My thanks to everyone involved in making this happen. We are still together in many ways and have exciting plans to make both clubs stronger.”

With the restructuring now confirmed, both clubs are set to begin a new era with clearer roles, renewed independence, and a shared ambition to grow rugby across the community.
