The Ritz Penzance to Reopen as Refurbished Entertainment Venue This September

One of Penzance’s most recognisable landmarks is preparing to welcome audiences again. The Ritz Penzance, on Queen Street, will reopen on 20th September as a fully refurbished multi-purpose entertainment venue.

The reopening comes just ahead of the venue’s 90th anniversary in July 2026, marking a major milestone in its long history.

A Venue With Many Lives

Built in 1936, the Ritz has seen many transformations. From its early days as a bustling cinema to a bingo hall, a hotspot for wrestlers and even ravers, it has always held a strong place in the town’s entertainment scene.

After closing its doors in 2013, the building stood empty for more than a decade. That silence is about to end.

Restored for Today’s Audiences

Over the past two years, the Ritz has undergone a complete refurbishment. The venue now boasts:

• A new stage and dressing rooms

• A commercial kitchen

• Flexible performance space

• A purpose-built dance floor

• Two new bars

The space will host live theatre productions, cinema screenings, comedy nights, live bands, DJs, dinner-dances and more. It will also be available for local groups to hire for performances and special occasions.

Working Alongside The Savoy

Geoff Greaves, Managing Director of Merlin Cinemas, said:

“We are delighted to have been able to save this wonderful building and give it a new purpose and lease of life. It will work in conjunction with our other cinema The Savoy on near-by Causewayhead, together now offering a much wider range of events. The renovations have been carried out over the last two years using mainly skilled local contractors and our own project team, on opening it will create several new job opportunities and add an exciting new entertainment venue. It will be terrific to see the Ritz once again playing a valuable role in the town for all of the community.”

Looking Ahead

The Ritz’s Art Deco heritage and community roots are at the heart of its revival. The opening programme of events goes on sale this week, promising something for everyone.

Highlights will include a New Year’s Eve party, rounding off 2025 and leading into the Ritz’s 90th year.
