Penlee Lifeboat Responds to Paddle Boarder Report Off Mousehole

Just after 5pm on Thursday 2nd October, the RNLI’s Penlee Lifeboat Ivan Ellen was tasked by Falmouth Coastguard to assist a paddle boarder reported to be in difficulty off Mousehole.

Lifeboat Tasked to Scene

Coxswain Patch Harvey, mechanic Tony Rendle and a crew of five RNLI volunteers launched and made best pace to the area. When they arrived, they found the paddle boarder fit and well, not requiring any assistance.

The RNLI confirmed the report from a member of the public was a false alarm with good intent. They added that such calls could save a life, urging people to always dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard if they believe someone is in difficulty.

RNLI Safety Advice

The RNLI also shared key safety guidance for paddle boarders:

  • Always wear your leash and hold onto your board if you get into trouble. It will help you float.

  • Always carry a means of calling for help on your person. You must be able to reach it easily in an emergency. If it can’t be reached, it’s no help. Consider taking a mobile phone with the SafeTrx app.

  • Always wear a personal flotation device. Make sure you are also wearing suitable clothing for the forecasted conditions.
