Mebyon Kernow to Celebrate 75th Anniversary on 6th January 2026
Mebyon Kernow will mark its 75th anniversary on 6th January 2026, reaching a significant milestone in the party’s history.
Founded in Redruth in 1951
Mebyon Kernow, which means “Children of Cornwall” in Cornish, was founded on 6th January 1951. The party began at a meeting held at the Oates temperance hotel in Redruth.
The meeting was called by Helena Charles, who was also known as Helena Sanders.
What the Party Stands For
According to the party, Mebyon Kernow exists to seek greater self government for Cornwall through its own legislative Parliament.
The party believes that Cornwall is a historic nation with its own distinct identity, language and heritage, and that it has the same right to self determination as other parts of the UK such as Scotland and Wales.
Mebyon Kernow also describes itself as a progressive party, aiming to build a confident and outward looking Cornwall with the power to take decisions for itself.
Marking 75 Years
The anniversary on 6th January 2026 marks 75 years since the party’s founding meeting in Redruth, highlighting its long standing presence in Cornwall’s political landscape.
