Birdwatching Group Records 34 Species at Ruan Lanihorne on the Roseland

Twelve nature and wildlife enthusiasts spent the weekend birdwatching at Ruan Lanihorne on the Roseland Peninsula, enjoying changing conditions and a wide variety of wildlife.

The day began with heavy fog and mist, before clearing to brighter sunshine later on.

Organised by Local Wildlife Groups

The event was organised by Rowena Castillo-Nicholls, Founder and Chair of Connect with Nature, who is also RSPB Kernow Group Leader and Publicity Officer of Cornwall Birds.

Thirty Four Bird Species Recorded

Over the course of the day, the group recorded 34 different bird species. These included large numbers of waders and wildfowl, as well as garden and woodland birds.

Species seen included Blackbird, Black headed Gull, Blue Tit, Buzzard, Canada Geese, Carrion Crow, Chaffinch, Common Sandpiper, Curlew, Dunlin, Dunnock, Golden Plover, Great Black-backed Gull, Great-spotted Woodpecker, Herring Gull, Jackdaw, Lapwing, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Little Egret, Magpie, Mallard, Mute Swan, Pheasant, Pied Wagtail, Red Kite, Redwing, Redshank, Robin, Rook, Shelduck, Stonechat, Widgeon, Woodpigeon and Wren.

Notable counts included more than 400 Golden Plover, over 200 Lapwing, more than 50 Widgeon and large flocks of Dunlin and gulls.

Deer Also Spotted

In addition to the birdlife, the group also saw five fallow deer during the outing.

A Relaxed End to the Day

The event finished with coffee and tea, along with cheese and biscuits and chocolate chip cookies, rounding off what participants described as a wonderful day out in nature.
