New Children’s Adventure Novel Celebrates St Mawes in Latest Famous Five-Style Tale

A new children’s adventure novel set in St Mawes is shining a light on one of Cornwall’s most recognisable coastal villages.

Independent South West author Brett Orchard has released The Legend of St Mawes: Six Out Of Time (Adventures Of The Six), the third book in his adventure series for readers aged 9 to 14.

A Story Set in St Mawes

Set in St Mawes, the story follows six friends who arrive for what should be an ordinary Easter break. According to the book’s description, they soon sense that the village holds something deeper beneath its postcard-perfect appearance.

While St Mawes is known for its pastel houses, quiet lanes and boats rocking gently in the harbour, the novel explores the idea that some places “remember more than they should”.

As storms gather, the village is forced to confront a story it has carried for generations. The six young characters find themselves at the centre of events involving long-buried legends, difficult choices and responsibilities they do not yet fully understand.

Inspired by a Love of the Village

Brett Orchard says the book was written as a love letter to St Mawes, where he and his family have spent a great deal of time. Real local inspiration and recognisable locations feature throughout the story, blending fictional adventure with a setting many Cornish readers will know well.

Described as being in the spirit of classic adventure stories such as those by Enid Blyton, the novel focuses on friendship, courage and the pull of history on the present day. The author says this third instalment is the biggest and most ambitious in the series so far.

About the Author

Brett Orchard is an author and podcaster based in the South West. He previously worked in broadcast media during the era of local radio stations, before moving into podcasting and writing.

He records from his home studio and hosts Brett’s Old Time Radio Show, a podcast inspired by classic radio storytelling. Alongside children’s adventure fiction, he has also written books exploring true crime and local mysteries in the West Country, as well as political thrillers.

Speaking about his writing, Brett says his aim is always to tell “a cracking good story”, whether that’s a nostalgic children’s adventure or a deeper dive into history and mystery.
