A group of 24 nature and wildlife enthusiasts enjoyed a packed day out on the Roseland Peninsula this week, taking in birds, butterflies, deer and a stunning array of rockpool creatures along the way.

The event, a birdwatching walk at Ruan Lanihorne, was organised by Rowena Castillo-Nicholls, Founder and Chair of Connect with Nature, RSPB Kernow Group Leader, and Publicity Officer of Cornwall Birds. Rob Nicholls led the fieldtrip itself.

Birds, Butterflies and a Fallow Deer

With the sun finally out, the group had ideal conditions for wildlife spotting. Over the course of the walk they recorded 24 species of birds, alongside three species of butterfly: Green-veined White, Brimstone, and Painted Lady. A Fallow deer rounded off an impressive list of sightings.

Coffee, Cake and a Spontaneous Change of Plan

After the walk, the group made their way back to the quay where they gathered for refreshments, chatting over coffee, tea, cakes, chocolates, and biscuits.

It was during this stop that Rowena suggested extending the day with a trip to West Portholland beach for some rockpooling. The group agreed and headed there in convoy.

A Rockpool Full of Surprises

At West Portholland, Rowena guided the group through the rockpools, revealing the creatures hidden within. Participants were treated to an impressive variety of sea anemones, including Gem, Dahlia, Daisy, Snakelocks, Strawberry, and Beadlet sea anemones, among many others.
