Saltash Police Warn of Fake Council Callers Targeting Homes

There is a knock at the door. The person outside says the council sent them, and they can sort your garden out today for a price. It sounds official. According to Saltash Police, it is anything but.

What is happening in Saltash

Saltash Police say they are aware of reports of rogue traders and doorstep fraudsters claiming to be from the council. The callers are offering basic garden work at overpriced rates, and they are targeting vulnerable residents across the town.

The Neighbourhood Team has asked people to be wary of unexpected visitors and cold callers, and to think carefully before opening the door to anyone they were not expecting.

How the scam works

The approach is simple, which is part of why it catches people out. Someone arrives unannounced, claims a link to the council, and offers a job that sounds routine. The pressure comes next, with an inflated price and a push to agree on the spot.

What to do if someone calls at your door

Saltash Police shared four steps to follow if you get an unexpected caller.

Stop

Ask yourself whether you are expecting anyone.

Lock

If you are not, lock any other outer doors before you answer the front. Some scammers work in pairs.

Chain

Put the door chain on. Remember to take it off again if someone with a key, such as a carer or cleaner, needs to get in. Look through the peephole or a window first to see who is there.

Check

Ask for an identity card and look at it properly. If you are still unsure, phone the company the person says they are from, using a number from a bill or the phone book rather than one they hand you. Do not worry about leaving someone on the doorstep. If they are genuine, they will not mind. If it does not feel right, say no. If you feel pressured or unsafe, contact the police, friends or family.

How to report it

Call 999 if the suspects are still there. If they have already left, report it on 101 by phone or online.

Police say enquiries are ongoing to identify the people involved, and they have thanked residents who have already helped. They also pointed to the town’s community spirit, noting that neighbours already look out for elderly and vulnerable friends and family, and will report on someone’s behalf if that person cannot contact police themselves.
