Truro’s Boscawen Street closes for two months from September
A traffic management sign has gone up in Boscawen Street, and it is not a small job. Cormac is preparing to close off a chunk of Truro city centre for two months so the granite cobbles underfoot can come up, be cleaned, and go back down.

What’s closing and when
The works are due to run from Monday 7 September to Friday 6 November. Cornwall Council’s Temporary Prohibition of Traffic Order 2026, confirmed online by Truro BID, sets out three roads expected to close 24 hours a day, including weekends, for the full two months:
- Lower Lemon Street, between Back Quay and Boscawen Street
- Boscawen Street, between Lower Lemon Street and Princes Street
- The full length of Princes Street
That is a significant stretch of the city centre off-limits to traffic for the best part of two months, right through the start of the school term and into November.
Why the cobbles are coming up
The closure is needed so Cormac can lift, clean and reset the granite cobbles across the affected roads. It is the kind of job that cannot be done in short bursts overnight or squeezed into weekends without traffic passing through, hence the round-the-clock closure for the full duration.
Getting around during the works
Cormac will signpost an alternative route for traffic needing to get around the closed roads, and pedestrian access to all properties will be maintained throughout. Anyone with questions about the works, or needing more detail on the diversion, can contact Cormac directly on 0300 1234 222.
Truro BID says it will liaise with the Cormac team once they are on site and pass on any further information as it comes in, adding that it fully understands any concerns businesses in the area may have about two months of closures through the heart of the city.
The sign in Boscawen Street has already caught plenty of attention from people walking past. Whether the finished cobbles are worth the wait is something Truro will find out in November.
