Sit close enough this Sunday and you will be in a room with a man who filmed the Beatles, argued about music with Leonard Cohen, and once talked Laurence Olivier through a scene. Tony Palmer is bringing all of it to Wadebridge for one night only.

A career built on music and film

The BAFTA and Emmy award-winning director will be on stage at The Regal Cinema in Wadebridge this Sunday, 13 September, at 7.30pm, talking through a career that has run from rock and roll to the concert hall.

Tony Palmer is best known for capturing music royalty on film. His subjects have ranged from the Beatles and rock icons such as Leonard Cohen, Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton, through to classical figures including Maria Callas and Benjamin Britten. On the night he will introduce his own work, screen restored archive features, and take questions from the audience.

Directing giants of stage and screen

Tony has just celebrated his 85th birthday and now lives in West Cornwall. He has earned global recognition and more than 40 international prizes across over 100 films, and directed actors including Richard Burton, Vanessa Redgrave, Laurence Olivier and John Gielgud. He counted John Lennon as a friend, and his on-stage directorial credits take in a significant number of operas.

A night in aid of Young & Talented Cornwall

The one-night event is being hosted by Tony’s cousin, George Stoy, of George’s Surf School in Polzeath, and half of all ticket sales will go to Young & Talented Cornwall, the Lord Lieutenant’s Fund that aims to give young people a chance to succeed regardless of financial need, physical challenges or background.

“Tony Palmer is a legend in his own lifetime, and this is an amazing chance to see him in person and listen to his unique and wonderful stories,” said Kate Holborow, Deputy Lieutenant of Cornwall.

“We are hugely grateful to him, The Regal Cinema and everyone else involved in supporting Young & Talented Cornwall. Such generosity really does change lives.”
